MIGRANT DREAMS

A powerful feature documentary by multiple award-winning director Min Sook Lee (El Contrato, Hogtown, Tiger Spirit) and Emmy award-winning producer Lisa Valencia-Svensson (Herman’s House), tells the undertold story of migrant agricultural workers struggling against Canada’s Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) that treats foreign workers as modern-day indentured labourers. Under the rules of Canada’s migrant labour program, low wage migrants are tied to one employer.

"Migrant Dreams is social justice filmmaking at its most gripping and galvanizing,
and is something every responsible Canadian must see." –Jordan Adler, Toronto Film Scene

"Brilliant and deeply disturbing." - James Bawden

CANADIAN HILLMAN PRIZE FOR JOURNALISM 2017

The 2017 Canadian Hillman Prize was awarded to Min Sook Lee for her groundbreaking TVO documentary, Migrant Dreams, which profiles a group of migrant agricultural workers who were lured to Canada by promises of high-paying greenhouse jobs only to find exploitation, surveillance, and intimidation via the Temporary Foreign Worker Program.

Since 1950, the Sidney Hillman Foundation has honoured U.S journalists who pursue investigative reporting and deep storytelling in service of the common good. In 2011, the Sidney Hillman Foundation inaugurated the Canadian Hillman Prize, offering this prize to a Canadian journalist whose work makes a difference to the lives of Canadians.
